Hot Apps for Class Ed Tech and STEM Tweets of the Day 3/22/14

http://www.coolmath.com/
I did an informal survey of which apps elementary kids (K-6) enjoyed the most. These were installed at school, either in a computer lab or iPads in the classrooms (where they were available).
Most often, Coolmath was mentioned as the favorite. http://www.coolmath.com/
Although, when I asked them if it helped with the basic skills of math, such as memorization of mulitplication facts, the kids said no, it was mostly games. Mom, Dad or Grandma helped them memorized their facts at home, usually with flash cards, store-bought or hand made. I asked a few teachers if they saw a connection to math improvement and this app, they did not. But the problem solving skills in gaming may be more subtly identified.

There were actually fewer reading apps readily in use than math ones in the several elementary schools I checked with. But maybe because there is one old favorite that is as popular as Coolmath.
http://www.renaissance.com/products/accelerated-reader

Renaissance Learning's program has been around so long, I was even trained in all its beauty over ten years ago. I love AR, and used it K-12, with great success, particularly the reading component. Kids still love it, too. They choose real,  three dimensional books leveled by AR,  placed in their hands by the school librarian and read at school during special AR Reading times, as well as at home. The books are not online and are not read on screen. (Unless the families invest in Kindle.) There are reading requirements specified for each student by volume and targeted exactly at their current reading level, which can be modified as they pass tests. The kids actually like the program, including moderately handicapped kids in Special Day classes. That is a wonderful accomplishment for Renaissance Reading. Kudos to you!
Teachers get lots of valuable data from both the reading and  math programs. The program is constantly aligned with State/and or Common Core standards.

Accelerated Reader
http://www.renaissance.com/products/accelerated-reader

The math component to Renaissance Learning is very effective, but less popular with the kids.

Ever order a magazine to your home for your kids? Maybe ZooNoos http://www.sandiegozoo.org/zoonooz/index.html, Ranger Rick  http://www.nwf.org/kids.aspxor  Highlights https://www.highlights.com/ ? Still a good idea, for that warm, tactile experience of handling and even the olifactory thrill of smelling a new magazine. That being said, I found fewer schools using reading apps than math apps (with the exception of Accelerated Reader, which is mandated by the district.) Now each schoolsite chooses its own apps.

Where this app was found, kids enjoyed it. This series of stories are informational as well as fictional with exciting illustrations and not too many questions. I don't know why it is not more popular.

Raz-Kids

This next app is designed for the lower elementary and Kindergarten kids learning to read--watching the kids use it reminds me of effective one-on-one reading tutoring without the warm smile of the tutor. Even the Kinders are very adept at using the app and enjoy it.

Reading Eggs

http://readingeggs.com/

These are the apps kids in my part of the world are enjoying--the schools I checked with include some affluent schools, some parent choice schools, some lower income schools with lots of diversity, and some special education classes. They all loved Coolmath and Accelerated Reader.

Children’s and Family Literacy

The work of Padak and Rasinski (2003) reviewed the effectiveness of family literacy programs and showed the benefits to all the component parts of the programs: the children, the parents, the families and the communities of those involved, especially in terms of both school attendance and achievement. The research indicated that family literacy programs impacted children‘s motivation, social skills, attitudes and even health. One significant finding was adult learner persistence increased when parents were enrolled in family literacy programs as opposed to only adult education classes. Another was that families in family literacy programs reported improved relationships and increased parental involvement in their children‘s educational activities.

Cheesy Jokes and Serious Thoughts About Easter

Confession is good for the soul, it is said. And I confess I do love the 'chocolate' holiday season from Halloween to Christmas to Valentine's Day to Easter. Cadbury has the queen of treats, the Creme Egg, appearing only at Easter. Absence makes the heart grow fonder.

I'm not alone. It is just too much fun decorating baskets with that eternal Easter grass (it never goes away, it's like glitter), and coloring the eggs the old fashioned way with vinegar, etc. The images of bunnies and chicks and ducklings are cute, even better than Santa who has a list and checks it twice. No unconditional love from him! And this is an outside sport, temps in the 70s, with light breezes, egg hunting, spring clothes and bonnets, blooming Easter Lilies. Well, at least here in SoCal.

Here's an article about how to dress your kid for Easter. The tradition began as  symbolic of a new spiritual start. Now what is it?
http://www.womanaroundtown.com/sections/shopping-around/what-the-well-dressed-child-wears-to-an-easter-egg-hunt

I did see a puddy tat!
Not one of Woodstock's, I'm guessing.

The secularization of this holiday makes it acceptable to everyone. Afterall, anthropologists say that all peoples celebrated the return of spring after the difficulties of winter.
http://www.timeanddate.com/calendar/march-equinox-traditions.html

Coaxing a smile from Eeyore.
Familiar pop-culture figures dominate all holidays now, and this is a word that used to mean 'holy-day.' Have we lost anything by this transformation?  Is the concept of the sacred now forbidden? Teachers carefully appreciate the separation of church and state in a public school. But everywhere?

Easter is the most secularized of the holidays in the USA, and ironically, the most important for Christians acknowledging the death and resurrection of Jesus. Question: how can we honor the rights of all and permit our students to express their beliefs in public and private?

This is not a student of mine. He is a model.
Here in SoCal this year it has become a fashion statement for middle school boys to wear rosaries as necklaces.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosary

And not only the latino kids. I've asked some of them what it means to them; sometimes they say it means they are Mexican, sometimes they tell me it is about their faith. Some say they just think it looks cool. So far, this practice has not been considered a dress code violation. In other places, it is dress code.

Neb. School's Ban on Rosary-Style Necklace Touches on Free Speech Issues, Christian News http://www.christianpost.com/news/neb-schools-ban-on-rosary-style-necklace-touches-on-free-speech-issues-57228/

So why so serious, MzTeachuh, and where are the silly Garfield jokes? OK, here we go.

What do you need if your Cadbury Creme Eggs suddenly disappear?

You need an eggsplanation.

How is the Easter Bunny like Kobe Bryant?

They're both famous for stuffing baskets.

Did you hear the one about the fifty-pound jelly bean?

It was pretty hard to swallow

The President and the Easter Egg

Why do we paint Easter eggs?

Because it is too hard to wallpaper them.

What does the White House do when there are too many undiscovered Easter eggs on the South Lawn?

Call an eggsterminator.

I am a huge fan of the Cadbury Creme Egg Bunny, and was charmed when I found one I could buy as an Easter Bunny. A stuffed one that cackles like a chicken, not a real one.

So, enjoy these animal actors. Why is there no Emmy or Oscar for animal actors?

Women's History Month: Marian Anderson

Marian Anderson
'Marian Anderson's Future Fund' was the name of the extra offering her church used to pass around so the little girl with the big voice could have singing lessons. Her dad bought her a piano when she was a very young, and after he passed away when she was eight, her mom raised her and her two little sisters. That's a lot of faith put into a young person.

Marian Anderson did not let anyone down. She not only used her very unusual gift for extreme excellence in opera, receiving international acclaim, but used her very unusual gift for grace and morality in the confrontation with baseness and racism.

She used a cash award from the city of Philadelphia to start an award for young people. Not for young people only of her race or profession, but young people of her humanitarian dispositions.

Even when accosted by racism in her own country, such as separate accomodations while touring, she was the perfect lady.  The most famous incident of racism was in the nation's capitol when she requested to rent a certain hall for a concert in 1939. The Daughters of the American Revolution, who owned the hall, refused to rent to her because they had a segregationist policy. The First Lady at the time, Eleanor Roosevelt, resigned from the DAR because of their attitude, and arranged for Marian Anderson's now famous concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial twenty-five years before Dr. King's speech there. I could also be a member of the DAR from three out of four of my grandparents,  but would rather not for the same reasons.

Lesley Gore- "You Don't Own Me" Live

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmOrWG2FTbg

You don't own me

I'm not just one of your many toys
You don't own me
Don't say I can't go with other boys
And don't tell me what to do
Don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display 'cause
You don't own me
Don't try to change me in any way
You don't own me
Don't tie me down 'cause I'd never stay
I don't tell you what to say
I don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please
And don't tell me what to do
Oh, don't tell me what to say
And please, when I go out with you
Don't put me on display
I don't tell you what to say
Oh, don't tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That's all I ask of you
I'm young and I love to be young
I'm free and I love to be free
To live
