Beware of Darkness

Beware of darkness in the material world by Buffalo Fawn
Thinking about the possibility of 'greedy leaders' being responsible for school test cheating. Profound poetry from George Harrison, one of our rock poets. Always have to look out for those 'soft shoe shufflers,' too.

George Harrison 'Beware of Darkness' (Album version)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7FBWPO-Jbo

Beware of Darkness  by George Harrison

Watch out now, take care
Beware of falling swingers
Dropping all around you
The pain that often mingles
In your fingertips
Beware of darkness

Watch out now, take care
Beware of the thoughts that linger
Winding up inside your head
The hopelessness around you
In the dead of night

Beware of sadness
It can hit you
It can hurt you
Make you sore and what is more
That is not what you are here for

Watch out now, take care
Beware of soft shoe shufflers
Dancing down the sidewalks
As each unconscious sufferer
Wanders aimlessly
Beware of maya

Watch out now, take care
Beware of greedy leaders
They take you where you should not go
While weeping atlas cedars
They just want to grow, grow and grow
Beware of darkness (beware of darkness)

Teachable Moment: When Lilacs Bloom'd...

I happily discovered we have a lovely-scented lilac bush growing in our courtyard. It reminded me of Whitman's poem.

Abraham Lincoln was assassinated April 15, 1865. He is memorialized by contemporary poet Walt Whitman in this poem of perennial sorrow and loss.

Not that Elvira

Lake and Flax New Zealand Scenery Silk Painting http://www.etsy.com/listing/102760702/lake-and-flax-new-zealand-scenery-silk

Exquisitely beautiful, I have always referred to this music as 'Elvira Madigan.' Just discovered that this moniker was only attached to Mozart's concerto because it was used as mood music for a Swedish movie of the same name (1967) about an Elvira Madigan who was a tightrope walker and in a murder-suicide pact with her lover in 1889. The music is played while she and Lt. Sixten Sparre row across a placid lake to an island for a picnic and then death. Which is really weird that the name from an obscure foreign film stuck to Mozart's composition.

Not Mozart's Elvira.
And to avoid any further confusion, this music is neither associated with the Oak Ridge Boys (who played 'Elvira' for the first President Bush when he was in the hospital last year- see Oak Ridge Boys - Elvira http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdFghZmdwXk) nor the television host Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.

Although I believe that sassy Mozart would have appreciated all the above allusions attached to his music.

Let's Get the Committee Together

The Night Watch by Rembrandt
Music for when the committee meets for those oh-so-serious discussions. Mahler was inspired by the painting to compose this music. I'm guessing the trumpet is the group leader.

I usually felt like the little lady to the left background trying to get my point made, the shrill violins.

You can kind of hear the desperation of budget cuts in this piece. Bernstein brings the necessary emotion as he conducts.

Cheesy Jokes for the Garden (These May Bug You)

Needing the cheese! Here's some jokes:

How do snails fight each other?    They slug it out.
Hello, honey.
You wouldn't say that to my face!

What did the bee say to the flower?

Hello honey.

Here's a cool site for lots of activities:

Why do bees hum? Because they can't remember the words.

What silly jokes....
What is the difference between a fly and a bird?
A bird can fly but a fly can't bird!

To bee, or not to bee...
Two flies are on the porch. Which one is an actor?
(The one on the screen!)

                                                                Mothmatics!

Woops, they misspelled it on the bottle and glass.
Frosted glass, please.

What do frogs drink?
          Croak a Cola

A rose is a rose, etc.
But I'm really such a nice guy.

What do you get if you cross a tarantula and a rose?

(I'm not sure, but I wouldn't try smelling it!)

Always jokes about the legs.
I'm already a walkie-talkie-er-walkie flyie
What do you get if you cross a centipede and a parrot?

 (A walkie-talkie!)
